Medical Malpractice Insights From Menzer Law Group

If you find yourself in a situation with an aggressive driver, you may not know what to do. Aggressive driving includes two or more drivers. One or more person endangers the other person or property. Additionally, if a driver acts violent or causes the other driver to react defensively, it may be aggressive driving.

According to the Washington State Patrol, you can keep yourself safe through various tips.

Do not exacerbate the situation

While you cannot always control what another driver may do, you can take some steps to try to deescalate a situation when it occurs. If another driver acts out against you, stay polite and courteous. Try to put yourself in his or her shoes and stay out of the way. If another driver becomes angry, avoid prolonged eye contact.

If harmed by an aggressive driver or if you have an encounter with one, quietly jot down the location you saw the vehicle, the direction of travel and the color or make of the vehicle. When you file a claim against or make a report against an aggressive driver, you need to be able to explain what happened and how it impacted you.

Do not become the aggressor

When on the road, anger, frustration and impatience are dangerous. Give yourself time for your trip. If in a rush, you may have difficulty remaining calm on the road. In addition to giving yourself time, listen to soothing music and drive in comfort. Keep your temper in check. Even if the other driver acts angrily, keep your cool because a calm presence can avoid a fight.

Never pull to the side of the road for an aggressive driver, instead find a public place or call the police.
